Gas certificate of compliance in Johannesburg & the West Rand

To get a certificate, the installation has to meet SANS 10087-1 in full: cylinders sited outside on a firm base and clear of openings and drains, a regulator matched to the appliances, fixed copper pipe with isolation valves, approved hoses only at the appliance, flues and ventilation where needed, electrical clearances around the hob, and a passed leak and pressure test. • Selling a property that has a gas installation — the transferring attorney will ask for it.
• A new installation or any alteration — a new appliance, moved cylinders, a changed pipe run.
• Insurance — insurers can refuse a claim for an uncertified gas installation.
• A rental or body corporate that asks for proof the installation is safe.

1. Cylinders — sited outside, stable, away from drains, openings and ignition sources.
2. Regulator and pipework — correct regulator, copper on the fixed runs, clipped, sleeved through walls, isolation valves.
3. Appliances — correctly connected, approved hose at the appliance only, flues and ventilation where needed.
4. Leak and pressure test — the installation must hold pressure.
5. Certificate — issued when it all passes.

You get a list of exactly what failed and a fixed quote to put it right. Common fails: cylinders too close to a window or drain, a flexible hose used for the whole run, no isolation valve, or an appliance fitted without ventilation. Once it's fixed, we re-test and issue the certificate.

No — there's no fixed renewal date. A certificate covers the installation as it was when it was tested; any change to the installation needs a new one, and when you sell, the buyer's side will usually want a certificate issued for the transfer.
